What If This Life

What If This Life

What if this life
is one that I chose?
A thicket of thorns
‘round so fragile a rose.
Struggles that strengthen
and woes that bestow
blooms from the muck
and might from the shadows.

What if this heartache
is how my heart grows?

What of this life
is not really real?
A self-authored odyssey,
a playwright’s appeal
to rewrite my story
until it reveals
how a boy who was broken
can break karma’s wheel.

What if this heartache
is how my heart heals?

What if this life
is more than I’ve known?
Higher than the stars
where timelessness roams,
where fragments of souls,
wandering alone,
find where they fit
and connect to their own.

What if this heartache
is how I find home?

Author’s Notes:

Some people believe in the idea of not just life after death, but life BEFORE death. That we choose to come to Earth for a specific mission and purpose, for experiences that will grow our soul.

And we don’t come alone. We sign “soul contracts” with others, agreeing to play certain roles in their lives, and them in ours.

Even if it’s not true, I’ve learned that a belief doesn’t have to be true to be useful.

In other words, just holding my mind open to the idea of eternity, the idea that I existed before this and will exist after it, the idea that I agreed to this life and the challenges I would face so that I would grow my soul through the experience — that is powerful enough to help me get through the struggles I’m facing, regardless of whether it’s true.

So I hold open that maybe there is a path and a purpose to this pain. And that maybe it will all make sense when I return home.
