All That Seems Stayed

All That Seems Stayed

All that seems stayed
is but borrowed.
Whether beauty, or fame, or wealth.
Be it laughter, or friends, or health.

So enjoy what’s today
and, tomorrow,
when the times of sand
slip stealth through your hand —
may a grateful heart stay
and stand open to face
what was and what is
without sorrow.

Author’s Notes:

I wrote this poem during an especially months-long season of extremely difficult health issues. As much as I could allow myself to sink into grief — and I have — I work hard to pivot that grief toward gratitude. Not denying the grief, but holding both. Saying, “Oh, I have lost so much.” And also, “Hasn’t it been amazing what I had?”
